Discussing Questions And Answers About Dog Food Brands

Mark asks…

What is a dog food brand that you use or recommend?

I usually use Dog Chow or Purina One. I was wondering what dog foods you use.

Jimmy answers:

Most of the foods listed here are crap! Purina, Dog Chow, Iams, Beneful, Pedigree… Like us eating McDonald’s every single day.

You should do some of your own research– sites like dogfoodscoop.com and dogfoodanalyis.com are good places to start because they rate foods by brand based on ingredients, quality, sources, and recalls. After that, you can move on to more sophisticated, in-depth research, if you’re interested.

I feed my dogs a raw meaty bones diet. Today, for instance, they ate raw split chicken breasts, with the bones of course. I used to feed a good quality kibble (Taste of the Wild), and I thought it was just fine… Until I made the switch to raw. My dogs are healthier, more active, more alert, shinier, sleeker, leaner… And they love mealtimes so much now. I highly recommend looking into a raw diet to anyone who cares about their dogs’ health.

A few good books to start:
Raw Meaty Bones Work Wonders by Tom Lonsdale
Raw and Natural Nutrition for Dogs by Lew Olson
Switching to Raw by Susan Johnson

Jenny asks…

Dog food brands?

what brand of dog food do you feed your dog?
what type of dog(s) do you have and how old is he/she/they

Jimmy answers:

Anything by these brands; Eagle Pack, Canidae, Timberwolf Organics, California Natural, Innova, Solid Gold and Chicken Soup For the Pet Lovers Soul are high quality foods. Even some of the brands you can get in places such as PetSmart (Natural Balance, Nutro, etc.) are ok.

Avoid junk like Pedigree, Science Diet, etc. These foods contain little meat (and any meat that they do contain is poor quality) and rediculous amount of grains and fillers. Feeding high grain/high carb food is terrible for the health of your dog therefore they should be avoided at all costs.

I have four dogs and I feed a mostly raw diet but a high quality kibble when time is tight.

David asks…

Dog Food Brand……

Is Blue Buffalo a decent, safe dog food??
Thanks, God bless.
Dog Food Analysis only give it a 3 star..

Jimmy answers:

Yup! Blue Buffalo is a pretty good dog food with natural ingredients. You want to steer clear of fillers such as corns and grains and lean more towards natural ingredients. I personally like Wellness dog food and I feed my dog the CORE kind.
