Discussing Questions And Answers About Homemade Dog Food For Small Dogs

Mark asks…

Really need help with GERBILS! please?

So my brothers had two female gerbils for over a year and i had no idea how they were getting treated. They got food, water and cleaned out but no playing with or training. Ive took them into my room now and our looking after them but they arnt well behaved my questions are:
-How can i stop them biting?
-How can i get them to come to me when theyre in there cage?
-Homemade toys or treats they’d like?

Is there any health conditions gerbils get? I should know about.
Before you say I’m a bad owner-Im not. I have a dog and a small animal already so taking the gerbils on has been kinda hard. Ive got theyre food, cleaning routine and i play with them alot and have bought them a wheel and a house. But i want them to be happy because my brother rejected them and they havnt got much longer to live.

Jimmy answers:

Since your careless brothers did not tame your gerbils, you have to start from the beginning and start by putting your hand in the cage palm-up. The gerbils may hide at first but soon they will come and explore your hand. If they bite or nip just a little, blow softly in their faces and say “No.” If they are biting while playing in their playpen, (which you can buy at Petco, colorful kind) put them back in their cage immediately. This will tell them that biting is not the answer. After they are comfortable sitting in your hand, raise it up gently and slowly. They will probably jump off. After a while they will stay on your hand and you can let them play in your lap one at a time. Don’t let them get away though! A toy that is good for gerbils is the cardboard tube from toilet paper and paper towels. They love these so much! One a week will make them happy! Also they love cardboard boxes and cardboard egg cartons, not Styrofoam! I really hope this helps!

Rejected Gerbils? Caring Questions? Help please?

They LOVE to chew. Give them firm paper, especially toilet paper rolls. They build huge castles of chewed up paper, then you throw the castles out and give more paper so they can start all over again.
We had gerbils, they are not very smart and they don’t live but a couple of years, but they are cute little critters. Even though they are compulsive non stop chewers. They have to chew, so give them something to chew on. And they don’t mind being in their cages. It’s safe in there and it is there house.

Just be patient and gentle with them. Maybe you can just lay your hand in the cage every day for a while until they get used to it as something that does no harm. Don’t try to grab, let them come to you. Put seeds in the palm of your hand. You have to be very still and very patient so they can learn to trust.

Good luck.

They also skeak when i pick them up is this normal or am i hurting them ?

Jimmy answers:

This is only an answer to your last question. If you meant “Squeek” than no, actually usually if rodents squeek that means they enjoy having you around.
